Picking Pockets

1956 unique mens sportswear pocket treatment

Confident candidates for topping summer slacks and shorts; three new shirts with newsworthy pockets.

Horticulturist may take a fancy to the flowerpot model, above left, but beyond that it is meant for conventional sportswear rather than the do-it yourself sort of enterprise. A floral pattern is handsomely embroidered on the black rayon shirting - which intensifies brilliant color - and the the whole arrangement gives an impression of growing from the pot-shaped pocket. It caught our eye in one of London's leading shops, and augurs a new direction in semi-elegant sportswear.

Also from London : slanting, yellow patch pockets that are simple in themselves but twice as bold by virtue of color and count. Once again, black shirting provides brilliant contrast for the high tones and restrains the whimsical design by inherent dignity. A good shirt for resort wear on a late summer afternoon.

The rising cycle of fashion for sports cars has produced far-reaching ideas in everything from trousers with wrinkleproof fit to low-crowned substitutes for high silk opera hats. And much of the sudden interest in pockets derives from coats and jackets that can carry everything you need to retune your Porsche a hundred miles from home. When it comes to shirts such as the one below, however, we strongly recommend your leaving your pliers under the bonnet where they belong and using the roomy pockets for such things as cigarettes.

This is a coat-style cotton twill, first cousin to the bush jacket that has proves itself invaluable throughout the tropics. As a comfortable compromise between coat and shirt, you'll find nothing better tailored to your motoring in summer weather.

Of particular interest is the treatment of the back ; from the yoke extend two pleats that are belted at the waistline with a stitched that prevents bulkiness and twisting. Short sleeves contribute to its free-and-easy shoulder action, and the front pockets are constructed with inverted pleats, consistent with the generous over-all cut.
